デモクラシーと哲学（フィロソフィー）は同じ一つの困惑への応答が示す2つの面に他ならない。すなわち結集する人間たちが、一堂に会するために聖なる絆を（あるいは、実際には両者は混同されているが、自然の絆を）もはや持っていないという当惑への応答だ。ここでデモクラシーとフィロソフィーをカップリングして「デモソフィア（民衆知）」という語を作っても言い過ぎにはなるまい。民衆を見定め、その本性と幸福を見極める技芸と学知がその謂である。
