Anne Cheng

Anne Cheng holds the chair of Histoire intellectuelle de la Chine at Collège de France. She has translated the Entretiens de Confucius (Seuil, "Points-Sagesses", 1981) into French, and also published a history of Confucianism in the early Imperial Era and Histoire de la Pensée Chinoise (Seuil, 1997), which has been translated into several languages. Cheng has also edited several joint publications, including the recently published La pensée en Chine aujourd'hui (Gallimard, 2007) which is co-authored with Jean-Philippe de Tonnac. She also holds a position at the Institut Universitaire de France.

Philosophy World Democracy

It will not be a world democracy, since it must be the people themselves who create themselves and arrange themselves. Rather, we affirm a democratic essence of the world: peopled by all the living and by all the conversing, wholly configured by their existence and by their words.
